Tribute Series: "Here's Johnny:" One Hundred Years of Johnny
Mercer
One hundred years after his birth, Johnny Mercer is best known as a lyricist,
but was also a composer and a popular singer who recorded his own songs
as well as those written by others. From the mid 1930s through the mid
1950s, many of the songs Mercer wrote and performed were among the most
popular hits of the time.
During his career, he wrote the lyrics to more than a thousand songs, including
compositions for movies and Broadway shows, such as “Moon River” and “Days
of Wine and Roses.” Some of Chicago's finest cabaret performers — David
Edelfelt, John Eskola, Carla Gordon, KT McCammond, Paul Marinaro, Kat’ Taylor,
with Music Director James Cebastien and Director Carla Gordon — perform
some of Mercer's songs including “I Remember You,” “Come
Rain or Come Shine,” and “P.S. I Love You.”
